Day 7 of the Pin Turning... September 16, 2010

I should start out by saying that this afternoon, after I woke up, I learned that we lost a very cherished family member...Aunt Rosie.  She passed away the night before at home...peacefully.  She was 97 years old, I believe...and she lived most of them like we all wished we could.  She was an amazing wife...mother....sister...Aunt...great Aunt. I feel such mixed emotions...I'm sad knowing that I will never see her again...but I almost feel joy knowing that she is finally at peace and she's probably still hugging her late husband, Uncle Henry, up in Heaven.  As my brother put it....I bet she's playing a mean game of cards right now (with Grandma, Aunt Mary, Aunt Connie, Uncle Henry, and of course...my Dad!)  Those are the things that make me sad...the memories. Those memories will NEVER fade.

On a lighter note....today was pretty good.  I was told that Aiden threw up again...but an hour after he ate.  I'm 100% sure it's due to the excessive phlegm cause by the jaw distraction.  I'm no doctor, though.  I also was told that the pin turning went okay....one side gave him grief...the other one he barely noticed.  I'm not sure what that's all about.  He DID fall asleep afterwards this time.  Today, he slept ALOT!!!  And when he wasn't sleeping...he was watching 'Thomas, the Train.'  It was a 'Thomas and Friend' marathon!  Pretty soon I will be able to recite every episode by heart.  Hey...anything for the Luv Muffin!!  Aiden did play a bit....don't get me wrong...he was VERY happy today...just sleepy.  I think that had a lot to do with his rough night last night.  My heart broke when we did his care tonight, though (cleaning around the pins particularly)...he got soooo upset!!  Tears and we could hear his cry so clearly. I'm still not sure if it's because of pain that he gets so  upset about...or if it's the fear of something else that may happen.  The reason I wonder is because when I asked Sandy, our nurse, if he cried when she did the pin care, and she said he never did.  So, who knows.  I hope it's the fear...if I had a choice between the two.

I AM very excited about the difference I am seeing in Aiden's jaw already!  Tomorrow is day 8...one week!  We have an appointment with Dr. Patel next Thursday...Sept 23....but before we see him, we have to get an xray of Aiden's jaw.  THAT'S gonna go over reeeeally well...ughhhh.  I had a friend ask me exactly where the pins were...it's confusing because it's hard to tell if they are the things on the side of the face or the metal things on the bottom.  It's actually those dangley metal thingies on the bottom...and they are turned by a special screwdriver. The pins are slightly magnetic which helps them connect.  There are arrows on the handle of the screwdriver that tell us which way to turn and when to stop.  Pretty simple, really!  The things on the side of his face are the incisions underneath steri-strips (which will eventually fall off...no stitches have to be removed...thank GOD...).  That is how they got the plates on his jaw bone.  Those are what move the broken bone 1mm everyday when the pins are turned.  Hopefully the pins can come out as soon as the desired length of the jaw is reached.  I guess we will find out more next Thursday when we visit Dr. Patel.   FINGERS CROSSED!!!

Well...I'm exhausted today.  So is Juan...he actually went to the doctor this afternoon because he has been feeling run-down lately....turns out he has a bacterial infection in his lungs.  He was prescribed some antibiotics to take care of it.  He always seem to get this when he is overly stressed and doesn't sleep well.  I worry sometimes!  I'm glad he went, though.  I hope he feels better SOON! It's going to be a LONG month, plus he starts classes next week...which is  VERY exciting!

I guess that's it!  I think I'll just wrap it up and lay and veg til the nurse gets here at 7am. Aiden is sleeping alot more peacefully tonite.  It seems to be an every other night thing when he's flopping around and all restless.   Good Night!!!   Oh, and don't forget to look at the pictures down below! There is no denying the difference!
